STRUCTURE OPTIMIZATION / DFM

Product Design Optimization

We simplify product structures around function, manufacturability and tooling requirements before committing to mold manufacturing.

What we review

  • Part count and functional integration
  • Fasteners, inserts and assembly method
  • Undercuts and mold actions
  • Wall thickness, ribs and bosses
  • Machining-intensive features
  • Tolerance and assembly references
  • Material and manufacturing process
  • Potential process changes

Optimize before mold design

Complex product geometry often adds slides, lifters, inserts, machining and assembly operations. We review these issues before tooling so the mold can be simpler and easier to manufacture.

Maintain function

Separate required functions from geometry that can be changed.

Integrate parts

Review whether multiple parts can be combined without creating tooling risk.

Simplify geometry

Reduce unnecessary undercuts and difficult manufacturing features.

Select the process

Align the design with the manufacturing process and expected volume.

Workflow

STEP 01
Analyze current design

Review product CAD, BOM, manufacturing method and current issues.

STEP 02
Identify complexity drivers

Separate cost and difficulty drivers in parts, geometry, tolerance and assembly.

STEP 03
Develop alternatives

Redesign the structure while maintaining required performance.

STEP 04
DFM review

Check manufacturability for molding, machining, sheet metal or other applicable processes.

STEP 05
Connect to tooling

Continue into mold design or cost optimization when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is product design optimization the same as cost consulting?

Product design optimization directly changes geometry, part count and assembly structure. Cost optimization can extend further into process, sourcing and supply-chain conditions.

Can we request only a DFM review before tooling?

Yes. Product 3D data, resin and expected production volume are enough to start defining a DFM review scope.
